A Crazy Thought About Credit

Credit CardI have finally just finished paying off my credit card.

That’s great news on the personal debt front and it is something that I have been meaning to do for a while now, but a strange thought rippled across my brain soon after I had paid it off. And it scared me a little.

I had this flash of a thought that it was good that I had $2000 again (that being the limit on my credit card). But I don’t have $2000 again. It is NOT my money and never was!

I totally realise that it is not my money and have been aiming to pay the card off for a long time, but still after all that, part of me still thought of it as my money. Very weird. And a deadly trap that could lead me into the debt trap again.

I am not too worried though - I think realising that I had the thought and that it was a negative one will stop me from heading down that road again. But I wonder how many other people think like that and don’t realise it.

I wonder if others think of the money on their credit cards as their money?

Credit cards have become so persuasive and ubiquitous in our society that perhaps people don’t see them as debt any more. Just as a handy way of purchasing things they want. Why wait when you can buy it now?

How do you think of credit cards?
